About Theater J
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Preview Shows and why are they discounted?
Previews occur in the first week of the run of each main season production. The shows are "at performance level," fully costumed and performed on a completed set, but the director is taking notes during the performance and still in the process of fine-tuning the production. Rehearsals are still taking place during the day, so there may be minor changes and improvements made by the time the production officially opens on Opening Night. Ticket prices are slightly lower for these previews, but audiences are still guaranteed a first-rate, professional performance.
What is your inclement weather policy?
Performance cancellations are rare and are usually decided late in the afternoon for an evening performance. Theater J does not offer refunds when a performance has taken place. When a performance is canceled due to inclement weather or other reasons, alternatives will be assessed at that time regarding possible exchanges or refunds.
Generally, Theater J follows Metro’s lead. If the Metro system is still running, the performance will go on. If a performance is cancelled the information will be on our homepage and on our main line at 202-777-3210. If a performance is not canceled, we encourage patrons to use Metro instead of driving.
What happens if, due to unforeseen circumstances, I arrive late for a performance?
Latecomers must remain in the outer lobby until admitted by the ushers into the theater and directed to seats in the balcony. During intermission, the patrons can then move into their originally assigned seats. Because of the intimate design of the theater space, this seating policy is adhered to in order to prevent disruptions to both the actors on stage and the audience members already seated.
Is there a dress code?
Theater J does not have a dress code, you will find that most audience members dress "business casual" — slacks, sweaters and such — though you'll see everything from cocktail dresses to blue jeans. Rule of thumb....be comfortable.
Are the theaters accessible to persons with disabilities?
Yes, Theater J is fully accessible to persons with disabilities. We offer assisted listening devices, open captioned performances and the theater is wheel chair accessible. For more information on accessibility, click here.
Do the theaters have listening devices?
Yes, Theater J is equipped with infra-red listening assistive devices. Patrons may request a listening device as they enter the theater. Listening assistive devices are offered free of charge, but a driver's license is required as security.
What's your policy on cameras, beepers and cell phones in the theater?
Cameras are not permitted in the theatre.
The ringing of a cell phone or beeper can be quite distracting for both the audience and the performers. If you bring a cell phone or beeper into the theater, please turn it off before the performance begins. If you must use your cell phone at intermission, please remember to turn it off before re-entering the theater.
What about texting?
Please do not send or read text messages during the show...the glowing light that your phone emits is distracting to both the performers on stage and the audience members around you.
Do all shows have an intermission?
Most shows at Theater J have at least one 15-minute intermission. On some occasions, however, a show may be performed without intermission. When entering the theater, you will see an announcement on the theater door regarding the running time of the show and the number of intermissions.
